An AI Literacy Framework for Primary and Secondary Education

The AILit Framework is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Its development is supported by CodeAI (formerly Code.org) and leading international experts. The initiative contributes to the Innovative Domain of the PISA 2029 Assessment and supports the European Union’s goals to promote quality and inclusive digital education and skills.

The final version has recently been published and is now available for download.

The European Commission in Brussels offers two engaging educational offerings: Experience Europe and Let’s talk Europe. These initiatives provide interactive, curriculum-linked experiences designed to bring the European Commission to life for students aged 12 and above, while offering teachers valuable resources.

Why These Programmes Matter for Your Classroom?

1.      Curriculum Alignment

Both programmes align seamlessly with subjects such as History, Politics, Geography, and Modern Foreign Languages, offering real-world context to theoretical lessons. Whether exploring EU institutions, policies, or values, these experiences reinforce classroom learning with engaging, hands-on activities.

2.      ‘Experience Europe’ – An Interactive Exhibition

Located at the heart of the EU Quarter in Brussels, this free, multimedia exhibition invites students to:

·         Explore the EU’s work through interactive zones, including a virtual meeting with the European Commission President and a 360° tour of EU projects.

¡         Participate in gamified learning (e.g., Play Europe quizzes) to test their knowledge of EU geography, history, and policies.

¡         Discover how EU decisions impact daily life, from climate action to digital rights.

The exhibition is available in 24 EU languages, making it ideal for language departments or multilingual classrooms.

3.      ‘Let’s Talk Europe’ – A Dynamic Debate Workshop

Designed for students aged 15+, this facilitated discussion encourages critical thinking and civic engagement. Students will:

¡         Debate current EU priorities, such as sustainability, migration, or technological innovation.

¡         Develop public speaking and argumentation skills in a structured, supportive environment.

¡         Gain insights from European Commission staff, fostering a deeper understanding of EU decision-making.

This workshop is particularly valuable for Citizenship, Social Studies, or Politics classes, and it aligns with goals to promote active citizenship and media literacy. Let’s talk Europe is available in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Polish.

4.      Practical Information

¡ Location: Rond Point Schuman, Brussels (easily accessible via public transport).

¡ Duration: 1 hour per programme (both can be combined for a half-day visit).

¡ Booking: Email the team with your preferred date, group size, and language.

¡ Ready-to-Use Resources: Access free lesson plans, fact sheets, and activities via the EU Learning Corner to prepare students before and after the visit.

¡ Hassle-Free Logistics: Both programmes are free of charge, and group bookings (10+ students) can be arranged easily via email: EC-experienceeurope.brussels@ec.europa.eu.

The Teachers' Forum of the European Schools Lithuania 2027 will take place in Kaunas, Lithuania, on the 25th–26th of February 2027.  

As Lithuania will hold the presidencies of the European Schools and EU Council in 2027, the Teachers' Forum will be organised seeking to strengthen collaboration between the European Schools’ teachers, management teams, parent representatives, pupils, policymakers, academics, and other professionals, and to enhance joint efforts in pursuing strategic educational objectives across the EU.  

Teachers will be invited to participate and present in these areas: 

  1. Reinforcing linguistic and cultural diversity;  
  2. Enhancing learning and teaching through safe, responsible, ethical and sustainable use of GenAI in education;  
  3. Launching a System-wide Transition Towards a Needs-Based Assessment Framework in the European Schools. 

Information will be updated in September.

What you will find in this edition:

  • European recognition scheme for teachers’ digital competencies - eTwinning teachers can now gain European‑level recognition for their digital skills through a new scheme supporting professional growth and career development. Completing all steps leads to a certificate recognising digital competence at B2 (expert) level.
  • New podcast episode - The latest Teachers of Europe podcast explores how teachers can help pupils build curiosity, ethical awareness and critical thinking when working with data across subjects such as maths, science and social studies.
  • Survey on digital wellbeing in schools - Teachers and stakeholders are invited to share insights on digital wellbeing, including screen time, digital distractions and online risks. The survey is open until 31 May 2026.
  • Courses - Self‑paced materials include a child‑centred approach to playful reading.
  • Webinars - Upcoming webinars address AI technologies for numeracy (21 May), financial literacy (27 May) and practical AI tips for teachers (4 June).

The Office of the Secretary-General of the European Schools (OSGES) is pleased to invite teachers and educational staff to an upcoming webinar entitled “When Students Lead the Green Way”, to be held on Monday 15th June 2026, from 16:15 to 17:45 (CET).

The webinar will be delivered by Ms. Anastasia Zanni, Sustainability Coordinator for the Nursery and Primary cycles at the European School Brussels III (EEB3). The session will explore practical approaches to helping primary school students take an active role in sustainability initiatives through student participation, collaboration and shared decision-making. Through interactive activities and examples of practice, participants will discover simple tools that can help transform teacher-led environmental activities into meaningful student-led projects.

The webinar will provide:

  • Practical strategies to support student participation and leadership in sustainability projects
  • Examples of student-led eco-initiatives adapted for primary education
  • Interactive activities and collaborative reflection opportunities
  • A simple 4-step framework that can be applied in participants’ own school contexts

In this Webinar, Elita Račiņa, Secondary Cycle Inspector for the European Schools from Latvia and Chair of the Board of Secondary Cycle Inspectors during the Latvian Presidency (2025/2026), will explore how Mission & Vision principles can be meaningfully developed and implemented within schools and classrooms.

The session will introduce the terminology and core principles behind the Mission and Vision document and provide practical strategies for activating these ideas at both school and classroom levels. Through shared practice and collaborative activities, participants will develop a clearer and more unified understanding of the Mission, Values, Vision and Development Pillars, while also experimenting with practical classroom approaches that can be directly applied in their own teaching contexts.

The webinar will combine theoretical input, real examples, individual and group interactive tasks, and a short quiz at the end of the session.
